Oatmeal is a quick simple breakfast. Warm on the tummy, keeps you feeling nice and full all morning long, plus it’s helpful to the cholesterol levels too!
I know for me personally…if I’m going to eat (and enjoy) oatmeal, it has to be heavily “flavorized.” And by “flavorized,” I mean it has to have enough sweetness and flavor from some other ingredient to make it palatable.
When it comes to oatmeal, I guess I’ve got a tough palate!
So if you’re like me, or if you’re just looking for a new option for your bowl of “warm your tummy” oatmeal, try out these options…
1. Mix in some diced apples with some sprinkles of cinnamon and nutmeg plus a little sweetener*.
2. Top the warm oatmeal with yogurt, dried cranberries and a few sprinkles of cinnamon.
3. For an indulgent bowl of oatmeal, swirl in peanut butter with chocolate chips (or cocoa powder plus sweetener*).
4. Toss some chopped nuts on top too. Walnuts go great with apples and dried fruit and pecans work well with the maple flavor!
5. And for a little boost of Omega 3s, sprinkle some ground flaxseed over top. Won’t change the taste one bit!
*sweetener = hoeny, maple syrup, brown sugar
As these chilly mornings wear on, you can spruce up your oatmeal with some of these easy mix-ins!
What’s your favorite way to “flavorize” oatmeal?!?

doesn’t flax seed give you tummy/gas issues?
Erin, The $5 Dinner Mom says
Not that I’m aware of Karen?!

We love using steel cut oats and doing it in the crockpot overnight. We’ll add in almonds, dried charries, diced apples, whatever we have available. Homemde vanilla extract, and either brown sugar, honey, or maple syrup. Delicious! Turns out perfect every time and it is ready when we wake up.

I love to add dried cranberries (or other dried fruit) while cooking the oatmeal. The dried fruit reconstitutes somewhat during the cooking and is delicious. I also add agave nectar as a sweetener. It is sweet and has a low glycemic index score. Yum!

I’m a big fan of mixing peanut butter in my oatmeal. I’ve also done: PB and banana, chocolate chips and dried cranberries, and you FOR SURE have to make Lynn’s baked oatmeal (from Lynn’s Kitchen Adventures). Its one of our faves… I throw in pecans for extra yumminess and texture.
Shonda says
Oh, yes…..Lynn’s Baked Oatmeal is GREAT!! My kids have never been big fans of oatmeal, but I made her recipe and now they ask for it all the time! We’ve even added a scoop of ice cream and mini chocolate chips to spruce it up!

I recently read in a cookbook the idea to eat plain cooked oatmeal with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Ice cream is essentially milk or cream and sugar – both of which you typically put on your oatmeal. We tried this and the kids asked for oatmeal the next morning – I did not entertain that idea but we did have it this way again the next week as a fun, but still keeping the sugar in check, treat. 🙂
Erin, The $5 Dinner Mom says
Fun idea!

I have eaten oatmeal 5-6 days a week for many, many years. I don’t get bored because there is so much you can do with it! My normal routine is either rolled or steel cut oats with ground flaxseed, homemade jam, homemade plain yogurt and occassionally, 1/2 a muffin, zuccinni bread or a hand full of cold cereal mixed as a treat! Yummo 🙂
Erin, The $5 Dinner Mom says
Love it Janet!

I love oatmeal! For my family of 6, I add steel cut oats, water, and a splash or two of vanilla in the rice cooker – the night before. I leave it plugged in on “warm” and click it to cook in the morning. Works great and no time in the morning. Sometimes I stir in cinamon and apples the night before. Yum!

My new favorite way to make oatmeal is with milk, or almond milk, a splash of vanilla, diced apples, a couple of diced dates, a dash of cinnamon and chopped pecans (sometimes chopped candied pecans) It is so yummy! The dates, apples and candied pecans make it sweet enough that you don’t need anything else! (oh and sometimes I mix in a little whey protein powder too)
LisaE says
We don’t eat oatmeal very often (even though we should eat it more) but when we do we usually just add in peanut butter and cinnamon. If we have pretty ripe bananas we will add it is as well and mash it up some. Peanut butter banana oatmeal rocks!
We also eat steel cuts oats, mostly plain….yum

I buy dried blueberries in bulk. I usually use them to make muffins or pancakes. I had a small handfull left over and decided to throw them in my oatmeal…… It’s my new favorite breakfast now.

My husband eats oatmeal every morning, He likes fresh coconut, dried cranberries, raisins, dried bananas and dried pineapple with a splash of milk. It’s like a tropical dessert for breakfast. :))

My kids love Banana Split Oatmeal. I found this when my husband began training for a marathon in the Flat Belly book.
Cooked oatmeal
toppings:
1/2 banana sliced
2 Tbsp fresh or frozen strawberries
1 Tbsp nuts – we like peanuts or walnuts
2 tsp semi-sweet chocolate chips
Yummy is the word in our house!

I LOVE everything pumpkin & i don’t know why i hadn’t made pumpkin oatmeal until last friday because it was wonderful!! i made up ‘3 serving’ of instant oatmeal, 3/4-1 cup of canned pumpkin, 1 1/2 tsp vanilla, 2tsp pumpkin pie spice(depending on your taste). sprinkle flaxseed on the top, i guess a few pecans would be good too, but it’s really individual taste, but my son LOVED it
